Course Description

Assent in Practice: Recognizing, Measuring, and Responding to Client Choice in ABA is a self-paced course offering 1.0 Ethics CEU for behavior analysts. Participants explore the distinction between informed consent and assent and learn practical strategies for recognizing client willingness and withdrawal through vocal and nonvocal communication. Through clinical examples and case-based activities, the course examines how to develop individualized behavioral definitions, incorporate meaningful choices and assent checks into sessions, and evaluate participation alongside treatment outcomes. Emphasis is placed on responding thoughtfully to assent withdrawal and modifying treatment procedures while preserving clinically meaningful goals.

What You'll Learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to distinguish informed consent from assent; describe the BACB Ethics Code’s expectations regarding assent; develop individualized, observable definitions of assent and withdrawal across communication modalities; incorporate meaningful choices and assent checks into everyday ABA sessions; select and interpret assent-related measures alongside skill-acquisition and treatment-integrity data; and identify appropriate responses and treatment modifications when a client withdraws assent.
