How Do I Become a Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT®)?
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements
To become an RBT, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Pass a background check (often conducted by your employer).
Step 2: Complete the 40-Hour RBT Training
Enroll in an RBT training course that meets BACB requirements.
The training can be completed online or in person and covers key principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
Training must be completed within 180 days (about six months).
Step 3: Find a BCBA Supervisor for Competency Assessment
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) must assess your skills.
The RBT Competency Assessment involves demonstrating specific ABA skills.
This assessment can be done in person or via video.
Step 4: Apply for the RBT Certification
Create an account on the BACB website and submit your application.
Pay the application fee (usually around $50).
Ensure you meet all documentation requirements.
Step 5: Pass the RBT Exam
After BACB approves your application, you’ll receive authorization to schedule the RBT exam through Pearson VUE.
The exam is a multiple-choice test based on ABA principles and behavior intervention strategies.
Step 6: Maintain Your RBT Certification
Work under ongoing supervision from a BCBA.
Follow ethics guidelines set by BACB.
Complete yearly renewal requirements, including a renewal application and competency assessment.
